“To be a Flower, is profound Responsibility” — Emily Dickinson

My pictures consist of multi-layered images of plants that I have grown from seed. Individual photographs become seeds themselves for the final layered images, many of which comment on the passage of time and the depth to be found in experience, as the plants bloom, fade, wither and die.

I received my degrees from the undergraduate film school at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts, and the graduate art department at San Francisco State University. After many years making photographs for advertising and editorial clients, I returned to my personal work.

Gallery shows in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Nashville, Scottsdale, Phoenix, Santa Fe, Sonoma, Healdsburg, San Diego and Atlanta, and a joint exhibition at the Sonoma Valley Museum of Art entitled, Akin: the Art of Nicole and Marc Katano, expanded the conversation.
